I did a lot of research into the history and details surrounding Juneteenth in order to create a design. The more I learned and the more I put Juneteenth in context with events of the last year, the sadder and more frustrated I became. I ended up walking away from the idea for a few weeks just so I could better wrap my head around what I was feeling and what I wanted to say.
I circled back to some of the celebrations and how, despite the injustice and set backs, we are still able to celebrate the progress that has been made. There is power and grace in the way we create our own joy and in how we carve out our spaces and moments that are meant for us and meant to celebrate.
In the end, the design I came up with is meant to be hopeful. It's meant to show how deeply we are part of the American fabric and it's meant to point to a understanding that our celebrations are part of how we continue to unapologetically push forward.
